Mary Inez Hood Lanier

Mary Inez Hood Lanier, 83

Mary Inez Hood Lanier went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2013 surrounded by her family.

She was born in Savannah, Georgia on July 19, 1930 to Kell and Lucy (Camp) Hood, and moved to Okeechobee in 1932. She attended Okeechobee High School, and married Wilbur Lanier the love of her life in April of 1947. She was a homemaker, mother and foster mother to thirty-one children who came to her needing a mother and a home.

She was a member of the North Okeechobee Church of God and served in the Ministry of Dunklin Memorial Camp for over 25 years. She loved to sing Southern Gospel Music much of which she wrote. She traveled throughout Florida and several states singing in churches, at camp meetings, campgrounds, senior retreats, the South Florida Fair and many community festivals. She began singing Southern Gospel Music in 1946, and was inducted into the Gospel Post Hall of Fame in 2006.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Wilbur Lanier; parents, Kell and Lucy Hood; brothers, Clarence Hood and Paul Hood; and sister, Anna Jane Guthrie.

She is survived by sons, Larry Lanier of Okeechobee, Terry Lanier (Cindy) of Sebring, Tommy Lanier (Roxanne) of Ft. Myers; grandchildren, Amy Lanier Wilson (John), Jon Lanier (Kerry), Heather Lanier Collier (Charlie), Stacy Lanier King (Dan), Reece Lanier, Austin Lanier, Rylee Lanier; and 11 great grandchildren. As well as children she raised as her own, Martha Hearn, Daniel Hearn (Rene), Opal Hearn, Charleen Hearn McDonald (Doug), Caroleen Hearn Dowling, Lynda Taylor Gilman, James Taylor (Debi), Nicole Morton Perryman, Scottie Morton; who blessed her with 14 additional grandchildren.

She is also survived by her brother, Kell Hood, Jr. (Joyce) of Pahokee; sister, Elizabeth Parson of Merritt Island.

She had many nieces and nephews; a host of friends; many people’s lives she had touched with the love of God who called her “mama”, Hobo, Aunt Mary or Mrs. Mary. Her heart’s desire was to help and bless others till the end of this journey.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2013 at Buxton & Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home. A Home Going Celebration will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Dunklin Memorial Camp, 3342 SW Hosanah Lane, Okeechobee, FL. Dunklin Pastor Rowland Terrell is officiating. Private family burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
